Three more sentenced in Paycheck Protection Program fraud case

ATLANTA – Teldrin Foster, John Gaines, and Carla Jackson have been sentenced for their roles in a scheme to steal Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) funds during the COVID-19 pandemic. To date, a total of 23 individuals have been convicted and sentenced in connection with the fraudulent scheme.

Graham selected as ABILA ambassador

Congratulations to rising third-year student Madison L. Graham for being selected as an American Branch of the International Law Association student ambassador. She is one of five ambassadors selected nationwide to assist with the work of the organization, especially in the preparation of the International Law Weekend 2024 conference.

National car insurance rates up 20.3% over last year

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’s (BLS) Consumer Price Index (CPI) report shows an increase of 20.3% in the motor vehicle insurance index over the last twelve months, with the all items index increasing 3.3% during that time.

Georgia Supreme Court cites Carlson's book in recent case

Callaway Chair of Law Emeritus Ronald L. Carlson's book "Carlson on Evidence" (co-authored with M. Carlson) was recently cited by the Georgia Supreme Court in Baker v. State concerning the corroboration of confessions in criminal cases. This citation marks the 75th instance that this text has been utilized by Georgia appellate courts to address evidentiary issues.


Kent Barnett named dean of OSU Moritz College of Law

Kent Barnett, currently Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Hosch Professor, has been appointed as the new dean of The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law. His tenure will commence on August 15.


Three men sentenced for drug trafficking involving methamphetamine fentanyl firearms

ROME, Ga. - James Lewallen Meeks, a Georgia Department of Corrections inmate, and two conspirators, Jamey Michael Latty and Mark Anthony Powell, have been sentenced to federal prison for their roles in trafficking firearms, methamphetamine, and fentanyl in Northwest Georgia.


Inflation in Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell area up 3.1% in last 12 months

A Consumer Price Index report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that inflation has increased 3.1% in the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell area over the last year, with a 0.3% increase over the month of April.


Oregon Tax Court cites Hellerstein's treatise in recent case

Distinguished Research Professor and Shackelford Distinguished Professor in Taxation Law Emeritus, Walter Hellerstein's treatise, State Taxation, was recently cited by the Oregon Tax Court. The citation occurred in the case of ABC, Inc. and Combined Affiliates v. Department of Revenue on May 14, 2024.


California man sentenced to life for murder outside Stone Mountain hair salon

DeKalb County District Attorney Sherry Boston has announced a conviction by guilty plea in the case against Tychicus Cameron Wilson, a 35-year-old man from California. Wilson was accused of shooting and killing Anthony Jordan Jr., 29, outside a hair salon on June 12, 2018.


Glynn County woman gets prison for defrauding real estate company

A Glynn County woman, who was in charge of managing a real estate company's office, has been sentenced to prison for defrauding her employer of over a quarter of a million dollars. Tabitha Dobi, 46, from Brunswick, received a sentence of 33 months in prison after pleading guilty to Wire Fraud, according to Jill E. Steinberg, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Georgia.
