The University of Georgia School of Law has announced the death of María Eugenia Giménez, who passed away on October 8, 2025, in Madrid, Spain, at the age of 71 following heart surgery. Giménez joined the School of Law in 1993 and contributed significantly to its international programs until her retirement in 2015.

Giménez received her law degree from the University of Mendoza in Argentina and held two Master of Laws degrees—one from the Vrije Universiteit Brussels in Belgium, and another from UGA.

In 1998, Giménez worked with the Institute of Continuing Judicial Education of Georgia to develop the International Judicial Training Program. This program trained over 1,000 participants from judicial systems worldwide. Her contributions were recognized by the Federal Military Justice of the State of São Paulo, Brazil, which awarded her a Diploma of Merit and medal for her work with the program. She also served as an international expert member on the governing board of the International Institute for Justice Research and Training based in New Delhi, India.

Giménez launched the Global Internship Program in 2001, offering summer placements for students in more than 70 law firms and organizations across 35 countries. The program remains active today as Global Externships Overseas (GEO).

In 2003, Giménez was named honorary professor by Universidad del Salvador in Buenos Aires. The following year, she received a Fulbright Fellowship to teach and conduct research on regional justice reform at Universidad del Salvador’s Faculty of Law.

She also established the Transnational Law Program in 2013, enabling foreign law students to experience American and international law in Athens through short-term immersion.

A memorial Mass will be held for Giménez at 5:30 p.m. on November 25, 2025, at the Catholic Center at UGA. The School of Law stated: "She will be missed by law school faculty, staff and former students."
