Jason Shepherd, a 2010 graduate of Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School (AJMLS), has received the 2025 Georgia Civic Excellence Award. The award recognizes individuals who show leadership, civic engagement, and contributions to their communities.
Shepherd has developed his legal career through private practice and public service. He is currently serving as a Commissioner on the Georgia Access to Medical Cannabis Commission. Appointed by Governor Kemp in 2024, Shepherd helps guide policies affecting public health and access to care in Georgia.
Reflecting on his education at AJMLS, Shepherd noted the school’s part-time program brought together students from many backgrounds. “Part of studying the law is the study on how to disagree better and model civility, even in disagreement. During my time as a student in AJMLS’s part-time program, my classmates came from all backgrounds and political positions, as did many of my professors. More than simply preparing me to be an effective attorney and advocate, AJMLS prepared me to find common ground and not just see the differences,” he said.
Shepherd was recognized for his involvement in community programs such as “Waffles & Wine,” which he co-organized with Michael Owens last year. The initiative encouraged community members to engage in discussions about civic issues and played a direct role in Shepherd receiving this award.
Throughout his career, Shepherd has worked on civil rights advocacy projects, partnered with organizations expanding access to legal resources for underserved groups, and contributed policy expertise through his commission appointment.
The law school acknowledged that Shepherd’s achievements align with its mission of preparing students for both legal careers and responsible community engagement. His path from student to attorney highlights how mentorship and dedication can lead to lasting impact.
AJMLS stated it looks forward to seeing further contributions from Shepherd within Georgia's legal profession and beyond.
