Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School (AJMLS) has announced the addition of three new full-time faculty members for the upcoming semester. The new hires, Professor Emma Cohen, Professor Alison Prout, and Dr. Mitchell Longan, will teach a range of courses including Legal Writing, Research & Analysis I, Civil Procedure I, Criminal Pretrial Motions, and Evidence.

Professor Emma Cohen joins AJMLS as Assistant Professor of Law. She brings seven years of legal experience to her role. Her career began as a litigation associate at Latham & Watkins LLP in New York with a focus on complex commercial litigation. She later worked as in-house compliance counsel for Strategic Value Partners, LLC in Connecticut. Professor Cohen holds a J.D., cum laude, from Georgetown University Law Center and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Virginia. At AJMLS she will teach Civil Procedure I and II as well as Business Organizations.

“Passionate about teaching and mentoring the next generation of lawyers, Professor Cohen draws inspiration from her father, a law professor of over 30 years, who instilled in her a love of learning and scholarship. She is excited to bring her practical experience into the classroom and looks forward to positively impacting her students throughout their law school journey.”

Associate Professor Alison Prout brings more than two decades of legal practice to AJMLS. Her background includes private practice as a partner at an Atlanta firm and service as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia where she prosecuted narcotics and fraud cases. She has also served as Chief of the Training Section preparing new federal prosecutors. Prout earned her J.D., cum laude, from Harvard Law School along with undergraduate degrees from the University of Pennsylvania.

“At AJMLS, Professor Prout will bring her wealth of trial and appellate experience into the classroom, sharing insights from her decades-long career in both complex commercial litigation and federal prosecution. Her professional recognition includes the U.S. Attorney’s Award, and she has been named a ‘Rising Star’ and ‘Super Lawyer’ by Atlanta Magazine. Dedicated to mentoring future lawyers, Professor Prout looks forward to preparing students for the challenges of legal practice while fostering rigorous academic and practical skill development.”

Dr. Mitchell Longan is joining AJMLS after holding academic positions internationally including at Birmingham City University in England where he was Associate Director at its Centre for American Legal Studies; Queen Mary University London; and the University of Sussex where he earned his Ph.D. His areas include intellectual property law and American legal studies.

“Dr. Longan’s scholarship focuses on copyright, user-generated content, cloud computing law, and emerging legal technologies. His work has appeared in leading journals and edited volumes, and he is actively involved in practical legal education, co-organizing seminars for working creatives and serving as Supervising Editor for the British Journal of American Legal Studies.”

The arrival of these professors expands AJMLS’s faculty expertise across litigation practice areas such as trial advocacy along with federal prosecution experience plus global perspectives on intellectual property law.

“With our new full-time professors on board, AJMLS offers students a faculty whose combined expertise spans practical litigation, federal prosecution, legal writing, and American legal studies. Their guidance across courses ensures a rigorous and well-rounded legal education. We are excited to welcome these distinguished educators to our community and look forward to the impact they will have on our students’ academic and professional journeys.”
