On September 3, 2024, DeKalb County District Attorney Sherry Boston announced the conviction of an Atlanta man in a high-profile murder case. The jury trial concluded with Dequan Trimell King, 30, being found guilty on multiple charges related to the shooting death of Brandon McCrary on September 22, 2019.

The charges against King included Malice Murder, three counts of Felony Murder, Aggravated Assault, Criminal Attempt to Commit Armed Robbery, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony, and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.

According to the investigation led by Det. Kershaw from the DeKalb County Police Department, officers responded at around 7:30 p.m. to reports of an armed robbery at an apartment complex in unincorporated Decatur. Upon arrival at the scene in the 4000 block of Waldrop Place, police interviewed three witnesses who provided crucial information.

The witnesses recounted that Co-Defendant Daizona Allen, 25, rang McCrary’s doorbell. When McCrary answered the door, he was confronted by King holding a handgun. Additional suspects joined King from behind the building. A struggle ensued during which McCrary was pushed into his apartment and subsequently shot and killed.

Following these events and witness testimonies, Senior Judge David B. Irwin sentenced King to life without parole immediately after the guilty verdicts were delivered.

Co-Defendant Daizona Allen was indicted on August 2, 2021 by a DeKalb County Grand Jury on charges including Malice Murder and two counts of Felony Murder among others. Allen remains in jail awaiting trial.

The case was prosecuted by the Homicide and Gangs Unit.
