Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School (AJMLS) recently hosted a fireside chat featuring Judge Renata Turner, Chief Presiding Judge of Fulton County Juvenile Court, in conversation with Dean Erika Walker-Cash. The event, organized by Dean Walker-Cash’s Critical Race Theory class, took place on Monday, April 8.

During the chat, Judge Turner and Dean Walker-Cash delved into important issues surrounding the racial demographics of children involved in the Fulton County Juvenile Court system. Judge Turner noted that children of color, particularly black children, are disproportionately represented in the system. The discussion also touched on the systemic challenges these children face and the need for resources and community support to address these issues.

Judge Turner highlighted some of the solution-focused strategies she has spearheaded, including the Fulton School-Justice Pathways Partnership and local anti-gang summits. Reflecting on her career progression, Judge Turner shared insights into her journey at Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School, where she started in 2007 and eventually rose to the position of Chief Presiding Judge.

Acknowledging the importance of Judge Turner's work, the Law School expressed gratitude for her continued friendship and the valuable insights she shared during the fireside chat. The event served as an opportunity for students to engage with a prominent figure in the legal community and gain valuable perspectives on juvenile justice issues.
