The School of Law is saddened to announce the passing of Sibley Professor Emeritus Julian B. McDonnell. McDonnell, who retired from the law school in June 2003 after more than 30 years of service, left behind a lasting legacy in the field of law. Known for his expertise in contracts, commercial paper, and secured transactions, McDonnell's scholarship included five books and numerous articles.
Highly regarded by his students, McDonnell was not only a dedicated educator but also a recipient of several prestigious awards during his tenure. He was selected for the Faculty Book Award for Teaching Excellence five times and received the Professional Responsibility Award. In 2003, McDonnell was honored with the law school’s highest accolade, the Distinguished Service Scroll Award.
Survived by his sons, Patrick McDonnell and Christopher McDonnell, as well as his siblings, Maury McDonnell, Elizabeth Shivers, and Tom McDonnell, Julian B. McDonnell's contributions to the legal community will be remembered and cherished by many.
As the community mourns his loss, a celebration of life ceremony in memory of Julian B. McDonnell will take place on Saturday, March 30, at 1 p.m. at the Stratford Clubhouse in Athens, GA. The School of Law urges everyone to keep the McDonnell family in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
