Fabian Taylor, Jr., a former inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution in Atlanta, has received an additional prison sentence after assaulting a federal correctional officer. The incident occurred when correctional officers observed that Taylor had covered his cell door window with paper. As they approached to investigate, Taylor threw urine on one officer and resisted by swinging his arms and kicking as the officers entered his cell.

After being restrained and checked for medical issues by staff, Taylor verbally berated the officers and headbutted one in the face. The assaulted officer experienced symptoms including headaches, dizziness, vomiting, sleepiness, and was diagnosed with a concussion.

U.S. Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg commented on the case: “Corrections officers have a demanding job, and they must be allowed to perform their duties free of violent attacks,” said U.S. Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg. “Inmates are not beyond the reach of the law, and they may not perpetrate assaults or other crimes with impunity while in custody. Anyone who assaults a federal officer in North Georgia, whether on the street or in a prison, will be prosecuted and held accountable.”

FBI Atlanta Special Agent in Charge Paul Brown also addressed the risks faced by corrections staff: “Every day, corrections officers go to work not knowing what dangers they may face,” said FBI Atlanta Special Agent in Charge Paul Brown. “The FBI stands ready to investigate such crimes against federal officers and we thank our law enforcement partners for their collaboration."

Taylor was serving time for offenses including unlawful possession of a firearm, violating conditions of release, and escape at the time of this assault. On November 12, 2025, U.S. District Judge Sarah E. Geraghty sentenced him to an additional one year and four months in prison followed by three years of supervised release after he pleaded guilty to assaulting a federal officer.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted the investigation into this incident. Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric Boylan prosecuted the case.
