Jason Wallace Lary, Sr., the former mayor of Stonecrest, has been indicted by a DeKalb County Grand Jury on charges connected to his attempt to register to vote and qualify for city council while under federal supervision following a felony conviction.

Lary, 63, faces charges including false registration; unlawful disclosure of voter registration information; two counts of false swearing; and making false statements in connection with filing notice of candidacy or qualifying as a candidate.

In January 2022, Lary pleaded guilty in federal court to wire fraud, federal program theft, and conspiracy related to the theft of hundreds of thousands of dollars in COVID-19 relief funds issued to the City of Stonecrest during his tenure as mayor. He was sentenced in July 2022 to four years and nine months in prison followed by three years of supervised release. According to investigators, Lary was released from federal custody in February 2025 and began probation. On August 14, 2025, he registered to vote and then filed paperwork on August 18 to run for Stonecrest City Council District 5. In these documents, Lary affirmed that he was not a convicted felon.

After two citizens formally challenged his candidacy, the DeKalb County Board of Registration and Elections reviewed the matter during its September 10 meeting. The board unanimously voted to disqualify Lary as a candidate and remove him from voter rolls based on evidence presented at the meeting.

Following this decision, the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office opened an investigation into Lary’s actions. After his indictment, a Grand Jury warrant was secured for his arrest. Through his attorney, Lary informed authorities that he intends to turn himself in at the DeKalb County Jail on Thursday, October 30. The DA’s office has agreed to set bond at $5,000.

Lary is expected to be scheduled for arraignment on these charges.
