A federal grand jury has indicted Aujawan Hymon, 20, of Savannah, Georgia, on charges of illegal possession of a machinegun. The indictment follows an investigation into a shooting at Oglethorpe Mall on July 2, 2025, in which Hymon was identified as one of six suspects.
According to investigators, Hymon was found with a firearm equipped with an extended magazine and a machinegun conversion device during the incident. Law enforcement officers recovered the modified weapon during their investigation. Authorities confirmed that Hymon does not have any prior felony convictions.
United States Attorney Margaret E. Heap stated, “We are working with our law enforcement partners to stop the illegal possession of machineguns. Let me be clear- if you possess a glock switch, or any device that converts a firearm into a machinegun, we will prosecute you to the fullest extent of the law.”
ATF Acting ASAC Robert Davis added, "Machinegun conversion devices are fueling a deadly uptick in gun violence, turning routine firearms into weapons of war," and continued, "This case is yet another example of why ATF is committed to aggressively identifying and removing these illegal devices from our communities."
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is leading the investigation along with the Savannah Police Department. Special Assistant United States Attorney Makeia R. Jonese and Deputy Criminal Chief Greg Gilluly are prosecuting the case for the United States.
Officials emphasized that all defendants who have been indicted are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
