A DeKalb County man has been convicted for his role in a violent home invasion and stabbing that occurred in Brookhaven. The announcement was made by DeKalb County District Attorney Sherry Boston.
On July 31, 2025, a jury found Jimmy David Mills, 60, guilty of multiple charges including Home Invasion in the First Degree, Aggravated Assault, Possession of a Knife During the Commission of Certain Felonies, and Criminal Trespass. The incident took place on September 17, 2020.
According to investigators, officers from the Brookhaven Police Department responded to a home invasion call at around 4 p.m. on North Druid Hills Drive, NE. Surveillance footage showed Mills entering the residence while a couple and their baby were inside.
The woman had placed her baby down for a nap and was monitoring the child from her phone in the bathroom when she received an alert about the back door opening. After hearing someone enter, she called out not to come into the bathroom. Mills entered anyway and asked if she was alone.
Her screams alerted her husband who was working nearby. He confronted Mills in the bathroom and ordered him to leave. When Mills refused, an altercation ensued that moved into the kitchen. Mills then pulled out a knife and attacked the husband, stabbing him multiple times.
Mills fled by jumping over a concrete wall nearby. Police later recovered the knife behind that wall and followed a blood trail leading away from the scene. A resident down the street reported that Mills rang her doorbell asking to use her bathroom; she refused after noticing blood on his chest.
A witness told officers she saw a shirtless man walking with something in his hand after climbing over a wall. Police detained Mills in that area while he was holding his bloody shirt.
Following his conviction, DeKalb County Superior Court Judge Courtney L. Johnson sentenced Mills to life in prison plus an additional 26 years to be served consecutively.
