The former DeKalb County Police Officer, Robert Olsen, has pleaded guilty to the charge of Aggravated Assault in the 2015 shooting death of Anthony Hill, an unarmed Air Force veteran. The plea was entered on May 28, 2025.
The incident occurred on March 9, 2015, when Olsen responded to calls about a person acting erratically at an apartment complex on Chamblee Tucker Road. Upon arrival, he encountered Hill in a mental health crisis. Hill was unclothed and unarmed as he approached Olsen's patrol car with his hands outstretched. Despite orders to stop, Hill continued towards Olsen, who then shot him twice after exiting his vehicle. Hill died at the scene.
Olsen initially claimed self-defense, stating that Hill attacked him. However, in October 2019, a DeKalb County Jury found Olsen guilty of Aggravated Assault and other charges including Violation of Oath by Public Officer and Making a False Statement.
Olsen's defense team appealed the convictions for Aggravated Assault and one count of Violation of Oath by Public Officer. They argued against the use of DeKalb County Police Department’s Use of Force Policy as evidence. The Court of Appeals overturned these convictions but allowed for a retrial on the Aggravated Assault charge. The Georgia Supreme Court declined to hear further appeals from the District Attorney’s Office.
Following Olsen's guilty plea, Judge LaTisha Dear Jackson sentenced him to 15 years with 12 years commuted to time served and probation for the remainder. He is also required to complete 100 hours of community service. His previous convictions for Making a False Statement and Violation of Oath by Public Officer remain intact.
District Attorney Sherry Boston commented on the resolution: “It has been more than a decade since Anthony Hill’s life was cut tragically short... We hope this plea provides them some peace.”
The prosecution team included Chief Assistant District Attorney Pete Johnson and others from her office with initial investigation led by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
