On May 13, 2025, a class action lawsuit was filed against Sweepsteaks Limited, the owner of Stake.us, a well-known online casino gaming website. The legal action seeks damages for Alabama residents who have lost money on the platform and demands a complete ban on Stake.us’s operations within the state.
Stake.us is accused of violating Alabama's strict anti-gambling laws by offering over 200 games of chance, such as slot games, scratch cards, poker, blackjack, and roulette. These games allow players to win prizes like cash-equivalent gift cards and cryptocurrency payouts that can be converted into US currency.
The platform reportedly exploits a legal loophole by not listing Alabama as a restricted area, thus permitting residents to engage in what is considered illegal gambling activities under state law. Alabama's constitution and various statutes prohibit most forms of gambling except for tribal gaming, pari-mutuel betting on horse and dog races, and charitable bingo games.
The lawsuit represents plaintiffs including Laura Hall from Phenix City who has lost money on Stake.us in recent months. Another resident from Phenix City identified as J.S. also reported losses due to his mother's gambling on the site. Both individuals believed Stake.us was operating legally.
This case underscores the rise in online gambling addiction in America, drawing parallels with the opioid crisis. The number of Americans diagnosed with gambling addiction has significantly increased with more people engaging in online gambling.
Beasley Allen attorneys Dee Miles, Mitch Williams, Leon Hampton, and Paul Evans represent the plaintiffs. They are committed to holding Stake.us accountable and protecting vulnerable individuals from misleading online gambling practices. Their aim is to make the online space safer and more transparent for all users.
