Acting U.S. Attorney Richard S. Moultrie Jr. has recognized the dedication and sacrifices of law enforcement officers in observance of National Police Week, which runs from May 11 to May 17, 2025. He acknowledged the critical role played by federal, state, local, and Tribal law enforcement in maintaining public safety.

"Law enforcement officers faithfully and selflessly help to protect our families, friends, and neighbors while risking their own lives to safeguard the public," stated Acting U.S. Attorney Richard S. Moultrie Jr. "We owe these men and women our gratitude and support for the dedication and bravery they display each day, often through unpublicized altruistic acts of service to the community."

National Police Week was first proclaimed by former President John F. Kennedy in 1962 to honor law enforcement officers for their service and sacrifices. The week serves as a time for the nation to celebrate the contributions of law enforcement personnel who work diligently to keep communities safe.

The National Law Enforcement Officer Memorial Fund reports that 148 law enforcement officers died in the line of duty in 2024. In the Northern District of Georgia alone, seven officers lost their lives over the past year:

- Deputy Sheriff Brandon Tyler Cunningham from Paulding County Sheriff's Office (End of Watch: August 17, 2024).

- Investigator Taylor Jaimeson Bristow from Carroll County Sheriff's Office (End of Watch: August 23, 2024).

- Deputy Sheriff Eric Anthony Minix from Coweta County Sheriff's Office (End of Watch: January 4, 2024).

- Trooper Jimmy Cenescar from Georgia State Patrol (End of Watch: January 28, 2024).

- Police Officer Jeremy R. Labonte from Roswell Police Department (End of Watch: February 7, 2025).

- Trooper First Class Chase Winston Redner from Georgia State Patrol (End of Watch: February 20, 2024).

- Captain Helio Armando Garcia III from South Fulton Police Department (End of Watch: April 16, 2025).

Each year during National Police Week, a Candlelight Vigil is held by the National Law Enforcement Officer Memorial Fund in Washington D.C., where names of fallen officers are engraved on a memorial wall and read aloud. This year's vigil is scheduled for May 13 at 8 PM and will be available via livestream on YouTube and Facebook.
