Phenix City has reached a $1.25 million settlement with Master Meter, Inc. and Empire Pipe and Supply Company following issues related to faulty water meters that led to billing inaccuracies. The agreement was secured shortly before the case was scheduled for trial in Russell County.

The defective water meter registers contained a software glitch causing premature battery failure, which resulted in the inability of trucks to read the meters' signals. Consequently, the system generated estimated bills based on previous usage, leading to unexpected charges for many residents. The city expended significant resources attempting to rectify these issues and subsequently engaged Beasley Allen to file a lawsuit.

Elizabeth Weyerman and Gavin King prepared the case for trial despite facing legal challenges. Their efforts culminated in a settlement that protects Phenix City residents from further billing surprises.

"The city’s proactive approach, combined with the work of Beasley Allen, ensured that residents’ interests were protected," stated representatives involved in the case.

With this settlement, Phenix City plans to invest in a new water meter system aimed at preventing future discrepancies and ensuring accurate billing. This resolution not only alleviates financial burdens but also sets an example for addressing similar concerns elsewhere.

Residents can now anticipate more reliable billing as Phenix City continues its commitment to their well-being and rights.
