The legal proceedings against a 16-year-old boy charged with the murder of a MARTA bus driver are set to continue, following a decision by DeKalb County Magistrate Court Judge Claire Jason. During a preliminary hearing on Wednesday, Judge Jason determined that there is sufficient evidence for the case to proceed on charges of Felony Murder and Aggravated Assault.
The incident occurred on January 3, 2025, at Decatur Station. According to investigators, three juveniles were involved in an argument with Leroy Ramos, a 47-year-old MARTA bus driver. The altercation escalated off the bus into a physical confrontation, during which one of the 16-year-olds allegedly drew a gun and fired multiple shots, resulting in Ramos's death.
Following an investigation by the Office of the DeKalb County District Attorney, it was concluded that the other two teenagers did not participate in the shooting. Consequently, charges against these individuals have been dismissed.
The DA’s Office continues to investigate whether the alleged shooter will face charges in juvenile court or be prosecuted as an adult in Superior Court. As this decision remains pending, his identity has not been disclosed.
This case is being handled by the office’s SB440 Unit. Senate Bill 440 allows for juveniles aged between 13 and 17 years old to be tried as adults if accused of certain serious offenses such as murder or aggravated assault with a firearm on public safety officers.
