Ryan K. Buchanan, U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia

Gilberto Contreras has admitted guilt to charges of possessing nearly 1,000 pounds of methamphetamine with the intent to distribute. Acting U.S. Attorney Richard S. Moultrie, Jr. commented on the case, stating, "Contreras distributed massive quantities of dangerous drugs that posed a significant threat to the health and safety of our communities." He also expressed gratitude for the efforts of federal and local law enforcement in addressing drug-related crimes.

Jae Chung, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the DEA Atlanta Division, highlighted the agency's dedication by saying, "This case represents the continued commitment of the DEA to identify and hold accountable those who engage in the distribution of dangerous drugs, such as methamphetamine."

The court heard details from Acting U.S. Attorney Moultrie about how DEA special agents received information on July 2, 2024, regarding a local methamphetamine trafficker selling multiple kilograms of methamphetamine. The investigation led them to a parking lot in Clayton County, Georgia where they encountered Contreras. Upon stopping his vehicle shortly thereafter, law enforcement found approximately 44 pounds of methamphetamine inside a black trash bag. A subsequent search at Contreras’s residence and backyard in Ellenwood, Georgia uncovered an additional 915 pounds of methamphetamine along with $40,000 in cash.

Gilberto Contreras is set for sentencing on May 13, 2025 at 2:00 p.m., presided over by U.S. District Judge Thomas W. Thrash Jr.

The Drug Enforcement Administration is leading this investigation with support from the Clayton County Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Dwayne A. Brown Jr. is handling prosecution duties.
