Chimise Awoyinka, who works as an Uber driver in Atlanta, is using her ride-share earnings to make a difference in her community, especially during the holidays.
Awoyinka has dedicated her time to helping the homeless population by distributing care packages to those in need—an effort that sets itself apart from her other volunteer activities.
The goal of her efforts, she said, is “just making them feel like they are not forgotten." While isolation can be particularly painful during the holidays, Awoyinka believes that the homeless need support year-round, and she wants to make it clear she’s ready to help at any time.
“During Christmas time, a lot of people—us as givers—tend to do more during that time. But I think it’s vital to build those relationships throughout the year,” she said.
To that end, Awoyinka added, “Not only do I do the care packages, but when it's cold, we go downtown and give out blankets, pillows, hot tea, and coffee.”
Helping the homeless is just one of Awoyinka’s charitable endeavors. Her own life experiences have also inspired her to support families affected by incarceration.
As the caregiver for her incarcerated sister’s child, Awoyinka understands the challenges these families face. She works alongside the nonprofit Prison Fellowship Support Group to provide assistance. Her nephew also participates in various outreach efforts.
“I’m a part of that nonprofit ministry because my sister is incarcerated. She signed my nephew up when he was about 3 years old, and we started as clients,” she said. “We’re still clients, but we also do volunteer work for them.”
Awoyinka’s income from Uber makes it possible for her to open her heart to those in need, showing how ride-sharing can have a positive impact on both drivers and communities.
