Beasley Allen has initiated legal proceedings against BioLab following a chemical fire at the company's Conyers, Georgia facility on September 29, 2024. The incident has raised significant health concerns and led to disruptions in the local community.
This event is the third major chemical-related incident involving BioLab over the past seven years, prompting scrutiny of the company's safety protocols. Previous occurrences also involved hazardous chemical releases.
The fire resulted in the evacuation of around 17,000 residents and caused several major roads, including I-20, to be closed. A countywide shelter-in-place order was issued due to ongoing smoke concerns. The smoke poses health risks due to a chemical reaction, with investigations into exposure levels still underway.
Air quality monitors detected moderate to high levels of tiny pollution particles in and around Atlanta on September 30. These particles can exacerbate conditions like asthma by penetrating the lungs and entering the bloodstream, potentially increasing heart attack and stroke risks. Many residents have reported respiratory issues and eye irritation since the fire.
"Our goal is to secure compensation for those affected," said Beasley Allen regarding their lawsuit against BioLab. "This isn’t the first time BioLab has been careless and caused harm to the community."
The lawsuit was filed in federal court in the Northern District of Georgia's Atlanta Division. As investigations continue, affected individuals are advised to stay informed and take necessary precautions for their health.
