On May 22, 2024, David Lee, Sr., 56, of Brunswick, GA, was found guilty by a Glynn County jury of one count of aggravated assault. The jury was unable to reach a unanimous verdict on a second count of aggravated assault, leading Chief Superior Court Judge Stephen G. Scarlett, Sr. to declare a mistrial on that count. Sentencing has been scheduled for June 18.

The incident occurred on November 20, 2023. According to evidence presented at trial, the victim was in an abusive relationship with Lee and attempted to end it while they were residing at the Oleander Hotel in Brunswick. The victim tried to rent another room to distance herself from Lee and asked him for her credit card. In response, Lee struck her in the face with a closed fist while she was on her bike and continued to hit her until she fell off.

The assault took place in the hotel parking lot and was captured by surveillance cameras. The footage shows Lee repeatedly striking the victim in the head with his fists and feet before grabbing her head and hitting it against the pavement multiple times. He also bit her on the side of her face and finger.

A neighbor intervened by hitting Lee with a broom but he continued his attack until the neighbor positioned himself between Lee and the victim while brandishing the broom and informing Lee that police were en route. Several witnesses called 911, prompting a response from the Brunswick Police Department.

Assistant District Attorney R. Ada Zeno stated: “Domestic violence is often hidden behind closed doors, making it one of the most insidious crimes. It usually thrives on silence and fear; but this verdict breaks that silence and sends a message that our community will not tolerate such behavior.”

David Lee Sr. faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted during sentencing next month.
