The Southern District of Georgia has issued a warning to the public regarding a telephone scam aimed at residents of Georgia. The scam involves fraudulent claims about failing to report for jury duty, with scammers going to great lengths to make their scheme appear legitimate.
"Federal courts do not call prospective jurors and ask for money or personal identifying information over the telephone," emphasized the Southern District of Georgia. They advise citizens to be cautious and vigilant when receiving unsolicited phone calls and to refrain from sharing personal information or money with unknown callers.
The District further advised, "Trust your instincts: if an unknown caller tries to pressure you, or says things that don’t sound right, hang up." They also recommend verifying any suspicious claims with the appropriate law enforcement agency or court officials.
Individuals are urged to report any instances of this jury duty scam or other fraudulent activities to the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) at www.ic3.gov. Providing a detailed description of the caller and any available caller ID information can assist in combating such scams effectively.
