Two DeKalb County Police Department officers have been indicted in connection with the fatal shooting of a man inside his Stone Mountain home in November 2022.
Former DKPD Officer Russell Mathis, 30, has been indicted on charges of felony Involuntary Manslaughter and misdemeanor Reckless Conduct, while DKPD Officer Jordan Vance, 30, faces a charge of Reckless Conduct.
The incident took place on November 4, 2022, when Officers Mathis and Vance responded to a call about a stolen car parked in the driveway of a home on Autumn Crest Court in Stone Mountain.
According to the preliminary investigation, Officer Mathis encountered Marando Salmon, 37, in a second-floor bedroom of the house and opened fire, fatally shooting Salmon. Salmon, who was unarmed at the time of the shooting, had thrown a cell phone at Officer Mathis, which Mathis mistook for a knife. A holstered gun was later found in the bedroom.
Salmon was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Following their indictments, warrants were issued for the arrests of Officer Mathis and Officer Vance, who are expected to surrender to the DeKalb County Jail in the near future. The case will proceed to trial at a later date.
