Residents of the Northern District of Georgia are being warned about a scam involving fraudulent phone calls related to jury duty. According to a recent statement, scammers are targeting individuals by falsely claiming that they have missed jury duty and are at risk of arrest or other consequences unless they make a payment.

The scammers are using various tactics to deceive their victims, including providing real information about the victim, court addresses, and names of law enforcement officers and judges. They may also manipulate caller ID to make it appear as though the call is coming from a legitimate court or government agency.

In response to these fraudulent calls, officials have issued a series of reminders to help the public distinguish between legitimate court communications and potential scams. One of the key points emphasized is that the court will always send a jury summons by U.S. Mail and will never demand payment over the phone or request gift card numbers as a form of payment.

According to the warning, individuals who fail to respond to a jury summons will be contacted through official channels, and any fines or penalties will be communicated in writing and in a formal manner. The statement also advises individuals to be cautious and avoid providing personal information or payment to unknown callers.

"If you have received a scam phone call or if you wish to verify whether you have been summoned for federal jury duty in the Northern District of Georgia, contact the jury office at 404-215-1640," the officials added as a precautionary measure.
